Literature Text

"Thank ya, sweethawt," she drones in her thick New Orleans drawl. I scold myself for wondering if she only resorts to terms of endearment because she has grown too senile to remember everyone's names.

------------------------------------------

I begin to wade through the sea of ticket-hungry children; all racing to be the first to that almighty game that they've heard gives the most tickets.

As I drop one small, priceless golden disc into the slot and press the "start" button, I wonder if this is how a compulsive gambler feels. The inevitable clatter of dropped tokens. The flashing lights. The monotonous congratulatory themes that all blend into one incessant buzz. All that's missing is the psychedelic carpet, scantily-clad cocktail waitresses, and a soft country ballad playing in the background.
This is an excerpt from a story I'm working on at present. Not really sure where it's headed, and it's definitely a step away from my usual style, but I figured it was a good a time as any to submit my first deviation, even if it's got hardly any substance to it - and I wanted some feedback before I went on. :]
